Christmas Traditions Past and Present | Lauren Ashley Design | Christmas Rendered

Waking up on Christmas morning is perhaps one of the greatest excitement people can experience in their lives. Having fond childhood memories of Christmas is something that I am grateful for. Early in my life, my parents made it clear that Christmas was an important time of the year. Having a twin sister allowed me to look forward to Christmas as an individual and as a twin. My sister and I look forward to time with my large family. Living in the mountains of NC, I was offered the opportunity to wish for a white Christmas and actually live out the white Christmas dream of every person around the globe.

My favorite Christmas rather than one singular day is several days centered around massive snowstorms. When I was a little girl, my Grammy’s and Grandpa’s house was a haven for my family. Grammy and Grandpa’s was the place to go on any given day, and Christmas day was no different. Their house was filled with Christmas cheer, and the atmosphere created felt like the Christmas wonderland that many thinks is only depicted in the Hallmark Channel movies. Grammy and Grandpa’s was the place to be during a snowstorm, and the holidays that we were stranded; some of the greatest holidays that I experienced during my childhood. Grammy would have her Christmas decorations up, and Christmas cookies baked ready for the coming days riding out the snowstorm. I can still smell the gingerbread baking in the oven. I can feel the icing sticking to my fingers. My sister and I decorated the never-ending amount of cookies that continuously came out of the oven.

Cooking was a very important of Christmas at my grandparents. Not only would cookies be a focal point, but Christmas dinner was always expertly prepared. The meat of choice for my family was always Ham. Christmas ham is, to this day, my favorite Christmas food. Christmas ham was not limited to Christmas day; however, over the next couple of days that the snow blanketed the western part of North Carolina, Ham would continue to be the food that brought my entire family together. These snowy Christmas days are what have shaped my idea of a perfect Christmas. There were some of the greatest holidays that I experienced during my childhood. Christmas Present Album

Now that I am a mother and a wife, I want to create these memorable Christmas days for my family. I want to look into the eyes of my daughter and see the same shine in her eyes. With everything going on in today’s world, the scene in the 2000 Grinch movie scene where Cindy Lou sings “Where are you Christmas?” makes much more sense. I want my daughter to have the same love for Christmas that I keep to this day. So, when the snowflakes fall this Christmas, I hope to have the gingerbread baking and the Ham in the oven. My Grammy still bakes the best gingerbread and still bakes the best Christmas ham. Continuing these traditions for my daughter, and I have been blessed to have all of my grandparents still living and four of my great grandparents. My daughter, Christmas, will have the opportunity to ensure Christmas with Great Great grandparents, and this fact is something that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Hopefully, as my daughter grows older, she will be able to look back on photos and have ongoing discussions about the memories made this Christmas.

So, as Christmas comes near, I join with every Christmas lover to find joy in remembering the traditions, make new ones, and hold each of your loved ones near.
