I wouldn’t touch you with a thirty-nine and half-foot pole! -You’re a mean one Mr Grinch
When the first animated adaption of the Grinch was released in 1966 not only was the Grinch brought into the world of television but, the release created an iconic song. You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch has had several adaptations since its initial release and has become a staple in Christmas music. The song has become a mainstay in many albums released by artists of various genres over the years. As is typical, the original version is perhaps the best! This post will be a link to an iTunes and Spotify playlist displaying the wide variety of musical artists who have undertaken the song.
The Song’s original setup is a classic and is easy to distinguish with the deep rasp of the singer. The newer version has been undertaken by a variety of artists, including Jordan Smith (the Voice), Jim Carrey (Grinch actor The Grinch 2000), Darius Rucker, (country music superstar) Lindsay Sterling (Pop singer from the early 2000s), and Turf Ravenclaw (the original song). Each of the songs sticks closely to the original lyrics. Some of my favorite lyrics found in the song are” “wouldn’t touch you with a 39.5ft pole, “you’ve got garlic in your soul,” “you have termites in your smile.” The background music is the changed variable in many of the musical works. The song has crossed genres of music and has become a popular choice for many Christmas albums for the musical stars of today!
The song has become a significant part of any Christmas playlist. I hope this Christmas season that “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch” will find a place in your Christmas playlist. All the versions I have found are unique! My two favorites are the version by Darius Rucker and the interpretation by Jim Carey! Music has not been the stopping point for the evolution of the Grinch’s role in Christmas. The Grinch has also begun to become a centerpiece in Christmas décor.
